2009 SOUTHERN NEVADA MASTERS CHAMPION "MR. STEVE SMITH" $1500 + A 2010 USBC MASTERS ENTRY
2009 SOUTHERN NEVADA SENIOR MASTERS CHAMPION "MR. DARWIN WIMER"
2009 SOUTHERN NEVADA MASTERS QUEENS CHAMPION "MISS CHRISTINA KINNEY"
This years SNBT Southern Nevada Masters tournament was a tremendous success as we had our first sell-out with a full field of 80 bowlers taking part in this years event. With the tremendous reputation that this tournament has for putting out a TOUGH but FAIR condition along with one of the BEST prize funds on the West Coast we had bowlers from Arizona, California, Hawaii, & Nevada. We feel this year this event has finally come into its own as it generated tremendous interest from the bowlers, sponsor support and was one of the smoothest run events we have ever had. This years we had our biggest senior entries with 31 entering this years event. The women this year had 7 entries and the open bowlers had 42 entries, and for the first time ever we had 2 junior bowlers - ZACK HATTORI & CHASE NADEAU.. Zack is the first junior bowler to make the SNBT MASTERS finals. This was the lowest scoring Masters event we have had as we used the EARL ANTHONY pattern which unlike most patterns that gets narrower as it goes down the lane the Earl Anthony pattern gets wider which puts a premium on shot making. This was the fairest pattern we ever used as the overall field average of 80 bowlers for 800 games bowled was just 191. The overall average for right-handed bowlers was 191 and the average for left-handed bowlers was also 191. It does not get any more fair than that. It took just a 200 average to make the finals and 198 average to cash. The highest game of this event was a 277 and the lowest was a 105. it was interesting watching the bowlers throw everywhere from up the 1 board to lofting the gutter cap. Due to the generous support of the SNUSBC we were once again able to award a 2010 USBC MASTERS entry to the tournament champion, a 2010 USBC SENIOR MASTERS entry to the highest senior in the 10 game qualifier, and a 2010 QUEENS entry to the highest woman in the 10 game qualifier. The winner of the SENIOR MASTERS entry went to DARWIN WIMER of Mesquite Nevada who led a field of 31 seniors with a score of 2063 and qualified 8th overall in this years event. DARWIN did this despite a low game of 143 in game 6. Darwin's high games were 266 & 255. A great shot maker Darwin Wimer is your 2009 SNBT SENIOR MASTERS champion. Next up we have this years SNBT WOMEN'S QUEENS champion and its the tough CHRISTINA KINNEY. Christina bested a field of 7 women to win a 2010 QUEENS entry. Going into the last game of the tournament Christina was at -77 and things were not looking to good for her. Moving to lanes 61 & 62 for game 10 Christina started with the first 8 strikes then in the 9th the ball came in a touch high for a disastrous 4-6-7 split....Christina went 9 out that frame then proceeded to throw all 3 strikes in the 10th frame for a big 266 game to propel her all the way up to -11 and grabbing the last cash spot plus the Queens Championship. You will be hearing allot from this very talented young lady for many years to come and were proud to have Christine represent Southern Nevada in next years QUEENS tournament in Texas. We have a new champion for 2009 ....Its STEVE SMITH of San Diego California. As many of you already know Steve was the HIGH ROLLER Champion in July of this year. Steve is one of the best match play bowlers anywhere as he went undefeated in this years SNBT MASTERS. Steve qualified in the 12th position in the 10 game qualifying with +42. Steve had a high game of just 228 and a low game of 179. In Sundays 2 game total, double elimination finals Steve drew in match 1 local sensation STEVEN VILLANUEVA. Steve Smith beat Steven Villanueva in a tough match 461 to 425. In match #2 Steve bowled another former High Roller Champion in Rick Benard. Steve won that match 404 to 380. Next up Steve bowled former local Masters champion JOHN DEBENEDETTA. John struggled in that match and Steve won 439 to 347. That left just 2 undefeated bowlers at this point and set up a battle of bowling titans as Steve Smith was going to bowl PBA regional Champion and SNBT 10 gamer champion BEN LAUGHLIN out of Arizona. Steve once again prevailed and won that match 429 to 399. That gave Ben his 1st loss and he then had to bowl Steven Villanueva who made to the finals of the Losers Bracket. Ben rolled over Steven 457 to 388 to set up another match with Steve Smith for the SNBT MASTERS TITLE. This match proved to be the best and most exciting match of the day. Ben had to beat Steve twice to win the title and that was not going to be an easy task. In game #1 Ben took the early lead with a 217 to 212 win to take a 5 pin lead into game #2. They battled back and forth all the way to the end and Steve Smith evened the match in the 9th frame of game #2 setting up a stress filled 10th frame with both bowlers score after 2 games now dead even. Steve was up first in the 10th and showed why he is a HIGH ROLLER champion and threw 3 strikes for a 193 and 2 game total of 405. That meant Ben Laughlin had to match him to force a 9th and 10th frame roll off and a possible 2nd 2 game total match. Ben got up and threw the first 2 strikes flush......Needing 1 more strike Ben came up a touch high for a 7 count and STEVE SMITH the 2009 SNBT MASTERS title by a scant 3 pins. BEN LAUGHLIN received $1000 for 2nd place. This years MASTERS will be one to remember and we are very proud to have STEVE SMITH as our latest champion. Steve will be the Southern Nevada representive in the 2010 USBC MASTERS tournament next year in Reno, Nevada. Steve will also receive a Championship plaque from the local SNUSBC and 2 tickets to the annual SNUSBC awards banquet. This years SNBT MASTERS was 1 year in the planning. There were many countless hours putting this event together to make sure it went as smooth as possible. There are a few people who without their help and support this event would not be possible. First up is the SNBT's own QUEEN of tournaments BRENDA BLANDINA. Brenda does the best job of anyone out there in handling all the tournament entries and financial situations that it takes to pull off events all year in the SNBT and TAT. Brenda's reputation is impeccable and bowlers can always count on getting any and all money owed to them which at times has been up to 1 year after a bowler has cashed. Brenda handles all sign ups and lane scheduling, tournament entries and payouts. She is the most trustworthy person I know and would not do tournaments without her. Never would I want to have her job at all with all the record keeping of the tournament funds and every event balancing perfect. I suffer from what's know as DiBartolo disease when it comes to money and those who know Bart DiBartolo know exactly what I am talking about. Next up is SOUTH POINT bowling and MIKE MONYAK who has helped push Scratch Tournament bowling to the record level it has reached this year with all the tremendous support they have given us this past year. Mike and company helps us with scheduling, linage, silent auctions, tournament boards, special tournament conditions and on and on. We encourage all bowlers to support South Point as they SUPPORT you. We would also like to thank JOHN DEBENEDETTA for putting out the EARL ANTHONY pattern and making sure the tournament was the best condition it could be. John came in at 5 am and prepared the lanes on his own time and then bowled all day making for very long days for him. Its people like John that made this years SNBT MASTERS a huge success. We would like to thank the local SNUSBC who with their tremendous generosity and support have helped this event grow to record entries. The SNUSBC donates the USBC MASTERS entry, the USBC SENIOR MASTERS entry & the QUEENS entry. Along with those entries they also give the winners championship plaques and 2 tickets to next years SNUSBC awards banquet. Thanks to TOM ENRIGHT who provides the SNBT and all Champions their champion cards and a copy for our tournament boards. We would like to thank our sponsors who donated items for this years silent auction which raised $848 that went right back 100% into this years prize fund.
